About The Elder Meals Service
What is the Elder Meal Service?
We prepare frozen meals (soups and casseroles) for Denman Island Seniors and Elders, every other week. Meals are prepared and distributed mainly by volunteers. The ethics of this program are to provide healthy meals made with as much locally sourced food as possible, and to offer this food without the expectation of any money in return.

How Does It Work?
-
Every other Wednesday, volunteers prepare soups and entrées using seasonal available ingredients, under the direction of our Meal Programs Coordinator.
-
Meals are frozen in individual portions in reusable mason jars or foil containers (jars and lids must be returned).
-
Food is delivered frozen to the homes of recipients on Thursday, the following day, by volunteer drivers. Recipients must have a cooler or freezer available at their homes for food drop-off, if receiving deliveries. Some recipients prefer to pick up their meals.
-
Recipients are contacted by a volunteer, usually 1x/month, with upcoming menus, and may order as many as 8-10 meals per person, per delivery.
-
Basic dietary-need modifications can be made and we take great care to follow proper foodsafe protocols. All our operations are approved by Island Health.
-
The schedule for cooking and delivery days is ongoing year-round. Usually we take a break over the holidays and sometimes for a couple of weeks in the summer.

What Does It Cost?
-
Our Meal Programs are designed to be 'barrier free' to everyone. We serve a variety of people from varying economic situations. Meals are provided at no cost to recipients. Donations to support our work are always appreciated but never expected nor required.
